– Tayvallich village (10 – 15 minute walk). Located just a few minute’s walk away, Tayvallich is a charming coastal village on the Knapdale peninsula, known for its picturesque setting on a sheltered bay. Surrounded by lush woodlands and stunning views of Loch Sween, it’s a haven for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
– Taynish National Nature Reserve (15 – 20 minute walk)
Just south of Tayvallich, and about a 20-minute walk from Otter Point is the Taynish National Nature Reserve, which is one of the finest examples of ancient Atlantic oak woodland in Britain.
– Carsaig Beach (25 – 30 minute walk)
Carsaig Beach is a beautiful sheltered bay overlooking the Sound of Jura. At low tide, a wide sandy beach is revealed, making it ideal for paddling, beachcombing and family outings.
– Knapdale Beavers, just a short 10 – 15 minute drive from Tayvallich, Knapdale Forest is home to Scotland’s first officially reintroduced population of Eurasian beavers. After an absence of around 400 years, beavers returned to the area in 2009 and have since become one of Argyll’s most fascinating wildlife attractions.
– Crinan Canal, Lochgilphead (20 minute’s drive) – Known as “Britain’s most beautiful shortcut,” the Crinan Canal is a lovely place for a flat walk or cycle between Ardrishaig and Crinan. Expect boats, seabirds, seals, and scenic picnic spots.
– Lochgilphead town (25 minutes drive) – Visit the local shops & cafés and pick up essentials or enjoy lunch in this small, friendly town. Moine Mhor National Nature Reserve, Lochgilphead (25 minutes drive) – Visit this wild and open bogland landscape, rich in birdlife and ancient history. Combine with a visit to nearby Dunadd Fort for ancient Scottish atmosphere.
– Dunadd Fort, near Kilmartin (27 minute’s drive) A must for history lovers – this hilltop site was once the seat of ancient kings of Dál Riata. Step in the carved footprint of ancient coronations.
– Kilmartin Glen (35 minute’s drive) Explore ancient artefacts and archaeology from the area in the museum (currently being refurbished – check ahead). Kilmartin Glen is a must-visit for history enthusiasts. This valley is home to one of the richest concentrations of prehistoric monuments in Scotland, including standing stones, stone circles, burial cairns, and ancient rock carvings.
